Registered Practical Nurse - Cardiovascular Surgery & Cardiac Short Stay

Union: SEIU New or Replacement: Replacement Site: Toronto General Hospital Department:  Cardiovascular Surgery & Cardiac Short Stay Reports to: Nurse Manager Wage Range:  $37.33 - $38.16 per hour (start rate is non-negotiable and in accordance with collective agreement requirements) Hours: 37.5 Hours per Week Shifts: 12 Hours, Days/Nights Rotation, Stat Holidays and Alternate Weekends Status: Temporary Full-Time (End Date ~ January 31, 2028) Closing Date: June 4, 2026 Job Summary 4B Munk team offers care to Cardiology, Cardiovascular surgery, and EP patient populations. Patients admitted to this unit have a variety of care needs including:  interventional procedures that require a shorter hospital stay, or cardiovascular and/or vascular surgical procedures as inpatients. The culture on the Unit includes daily interprofessional teamwork and supports individual nurse’s professional development, as well as offers opportunities to develop excellent critical thinking and decision making skills. As part of a diverse interprofessional team, nurses require knowledge, experience and skills within cardiology, cardiovascular and vascular surgery clinical fields. These include but are not limited to: arrhythmia interpretation, telemetry monitoring, removal of radial clamps and/or femoral sheaths post-procedure, and postoperative care: chest tubes care, temporary pacemaker care, etc. Duties As a member of the UHN and the Nursing Multi-disciplinary Team, the Registered Practical Nurse practices in accordance with relevant legislation/standards, meeting the legal and ethical requirements of the profession. The principal responsibilities include: Applying knowledge of nursing science, theory, skill and critical decision making in the provision of compassionate, collaborative and competent care in accordance with the UHN Professional Practice Model for Nursing and the mission and vision of nursing at the UHN  Ensuring practice is consistent with professional standards and the ethical framework as outlined by the College of Nurses of Ontario and the UHN policy and procedure Demonstrating commitment to professional life long learning by participating in continuing education activities to meet the needs of the patient population served and the standards of the profession  Performing reflective practice, analyzing and evaluating nursing knowledge and modifying practice accordingly to improve the quality of nursing and patient care Performing cross-functional and other responsibilities, as assigned. Completion of college, or other approved Registered Practical Nursing program including practicum experience Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Practical Nurse Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (B.C.L.S.) certification Current medication certificate which meets the standards of practice established by the College of Nurses of Ontario Demonstrates competencies as per unit/program competency-based checklist Recent experience working with adult acute care Surgical patients preferred Ability to perform duties in a professional and courteous manner and produce high quality work while meeting deadlines in accordance to UHN standards Exercise initiative and good judgment with ability to multi-task Able to comply with the physical demands of the Unit Evidence of continuing education Demonstrated leadership skills with evidence of strong organizational and decision making skills Effective organizational, interpersonal and communication and time management skills Knowledge of applicable legislative, UHN and/or departmental policies Client service oriented, with the ability to effectively work with diversity and appreciate that people with different opinions, backgrounds and characteristics bring richness to the challenge or situation at hand Good computer skills Why join UHN?   In addition to working alongside some of the most talented and inspiring healthcare professionals in the world, UHN offers a wide range of benefits, programs and perks.
