Position Snapshot If you have safety in mind, are outgoing, if you like working in an outdoor environment in all weather conditions and would enjoy keeping children safe on their way to and from school, you may be suited for this position. This position works under the direct supervision of the School Crossing Guard Coordinator. What you’ll be doing As a Crossing Guard, your responsibilities include but are not limited to: Controlling the flow of traffic to allow for the safe, supervised crossing of students and pedestrians. Communicating clearly and effectively using spoken commands and hand signals. Instructing students and other pedestrians in safe crossing procedures. Exercising sound judgement in determining safe opportunities to cross students, based on weather conditions, road conditions, distance and speed of traffic, gaps in traffic and distracted driving. Other duties as assigned. What you bring The successful candidate will have: Good Vision – you must be able to see vehicles, different colours (stoplights), children and signal indications from close and far distances. Good Hearing – you must be able to communicate with children, motorists, parents and be able to hear vehicles approaching, honking, etc. Physically fit – you must be able to climb, stretch, carry and lift items weighing approximately 4 lbs, stand, walk and twist for periods of up to 1.5 hours daily in all weather conditions. Must be able to report for work at the designated crossing locations and times as scheduled. As the nature of this position is to ensure the safety of children and pedestrians, Crossing Guards may need to be reassessed from time to time to ensure they are fit to perform the necessary duties. Must be legally able to work in Canada. What we offer Rate of pay: $537.21 bi-weekly (2025 rate) Hours of work: School Crossing Guards work during the school year (September to June, excluding holidays and PA days) and must be able to work for a half hour in the morning between the hours of 7:00 am and 8:00 am and a half hour in the afternoon between 3:00 pm and 4:00 pm Monday to Friday. Exact times are based on crossing guard location. School crossing guards are required to be at their assigned crossing site in the morning and after school. Compensation for all scheduled school PA days (5-7 average a year), Christmas and New Year Break (approximately 2 weeks), March Break (1 week), all statutory holidays. Compensation for all mandatory scheduled trainings and meeting (2-4 meetings a year during daytime hours). Rain suit and other equipment provided. Boot allowance offered (currently $100 per year).
