Independent energy is here. Help us deploy it.
Energy should be free. Free from aging grids, fragile supply chains, and unnecessary extraction. At Moment Energy, we’re building a world where clean power is abundant, affordable, and uninterrupted for everyone.
The world doesn’t need another promise about energy; it needs proof that a freer future is possible. Moment Energy is the pragmatic liberator of power, the only company certified to turn the largest untapped energy supply into independent energy.
Now is the moment. While the industry scraps millions of batteries with decades of life left, we put them to work by repurposing large-format batteries into advanced battery energy storage systems that deliver real-world impact.
We were told second-life batteries would never be safe enough or scalable enough. We didn’t argue, we engineered the solution. Today, Moment Energy delivers 5x the energy density and holds the certifications required to deploy energy independence at scale.
The Opportunity
Moment Energy is seeking a Certification Engineer that will serve as Moment Energy’s subject-matter expert on energy storage certification standards and regulatory requirements. This role is responsible for guiding product teams through certification requirements, managing certification timelines and budgets, and coordinating closely with testing labs and regulatory bodies.
You will work cross-functionally with engineering, product, and leadership teams to ensure Design for Certification is embedded in product development from the earliest stages. This role will also act as the primary liaison with certification laboratories and local authorities to ensure our energy storage systems meet all regulatory requirements for deployment.
Responsibilities and Duties
Certification & Regulatory Expertise
Serve as the internal subject-matter expert on energy storage certification standards including CSA, UL, NFPA, and other relevant regulatory frameworks. Research, interpret, and summarize applicable standards for internal teams. Stay current on evolving industry regulations and certification requirements.
Design for Certification
Provide certification guidance during product design reviews. Define certification requirements for new product designs. Collaborate with engineering teams to ensure certification considerations are incorporated early in development.
Certification Planning & Execution
Develop and manage certification timelines in collaboration with engineering leadership. Define key milestones, risks, and critical paths for certification programs. Track certification activities to ensure products meet deadlines and regulatory requirements.
Budget & Resource Management
Define certification budgets including testing costs, samples, consultants, and lab fees. Track certification expenditures and testing resources.
External Certification Coordination
Serve as the primary point of contact for certification laboratories and Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories (NRTLs). Coordinate testing schedules, documentation, and certification activities. Gather quotes and manage vendor relationships for certification services.
Risk Assessment & Compliance
Identify certification risks and develop mitigation strategies. Ensure ongoing compliance with applicable standards throughout product development.
Market Certification & Deployment Requirements
Engage with Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs) to determine requirements for energy storage installations. Research certification and compliance requirements for deployment in new geographic markets.
The Candidate
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical or other related Engineering degree. Previous experience certifying large hardware or electrical products. Strong knowledge of the North American NRTLs and certification bodies. Experience managing long-term certification or compliance projects. Proven track record bringing products through certification.
Strong understanding of regulatory standards and certification processes. Ability to analyze technical documentation and identify compliance risks. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. High attention to detail in documentation and compliance processes. Ability to collaborate across engineering, production, and quality teams.
Experience working with lithium-ion battery systems. Knowledge of energy policy, sustainability initiatives, and regulatory trends. Familiarity with grid-connected energy systems or PCS integration. Knowledge of UL1973, UL9540, and UL9540A certification processes.
